1880 – New York’s Broadway from 14th
to 26th street was first lighted by electricity and became known as
the “Great White Way.”
1943 – Norman Bel Geddes
Design ASSC Machine Cover
Thomas
Watson, Jr. informs Harvard University President James B. Conant that Norman
Bel Geddes would be designing the cover of the Harvard Mark I computer. Bel
Geddes was an American industrial designer who also worked on such things as
Philco radio cabinets and a Graham Page car. He was deeply interested in the
future, illustrating a book in 1932 that described, among other things, a huge
passenger airplane with public lounge and an exercise center. Bel Geddes also
designed the GM pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair.
1951 – In Idaho, the Experimental Breed
Reactor no. 1 aka EBR-1 became the first power plant to produce electricity
using atomic energy. It would take two more years to prove it could create more
fuel than it consumed.
1990 – The first web server and page went
live at CERN. It was only available internally. The first public web page
wouldn’t be available until the following August.
1996 – Apple Buys NeXT
Steve
Jobs started Apple. When he left Apple, he started NeXT. When Apple started to
fall, Steve Jobs came back. Of course, having 2 computer companies is not a
good idea – So why not buy it out? That is what Apple did. In a $400 Million
deal, they got a new OS and Steve Jobs. Of course, Jobs did not become CEO of
Apple Again – he reported to current CEO Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio.
NeXTstep OS would ultimately become Mac OS X.
