1785 – Difference Engine Builder Scheutz Born
George Scheutz (1785-1873), who
with his son built a commercial available calculator based on Charles Babbage’s
Difference Engine, is born in Stockholm. After reading about the Difference
Engine in 1833, Scheutz and son Edvard worked on a version that could process
15-digit numbers and calculate using fourth-order differences. The result won
the gold medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1855 and was used by the Dudley
Observatory in New York to calculate a few tables. A second copy was used by
the British Registrar General to calculate tables for the developing life
insurance industry.
1889 – Fusajiro Yamauchi founded
Nintendo Koppai in Kyoto, Japan, to manufacture hanafuda, Japanese playing
cards. Mario cam much later.
1999 – Blogger Turns 15
Its considered the one of the earliest
publishing tools, Blogger personal website publishing system by Pyra Labs was
released. The software was co-founded by Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan. The
Blogger code was re-written in 2002 and in 2003, Google purchased Pyra for an
undisclosed sum.
1999 – NASA lost contact with the
Mars Climate Orbiter. It began orbit normally, but after it went behind the
planet and out of range, it never made contact again. It was later determined
that the approach attitude was wrong because software put out imperial units
instead of metric units.
1999 – Two years after its founding,
Netflix launched its subscription DVD rental service which proved much more
popular than renting DVDs individually by mail.
2002 – Phoenix 0.1 Released
Mozilla releases Phoenix 0.1, the
first release of what will become Firefox. The browser will change names
because of trademark issues with Phoenix technologies. The initial first
release of Firefox though will be released on Nov. 9, 2004.
2008 – The First Android Introduced
Google and T-Mobile introduce the
T-Mobile G1 (also known as the HTC Dream), the world’s first Android-based
smartphone. By raw sales numbers, today Android is the World’s most popular
smartphone platform.
