1947 - Bardeen and Brattain Demonstrate the Transistor to Bell Labs
Supervisors
John Bardeen and Walter Brattain demonstrate
the point-contact transistor, made from strips of gold foil on a plastic
triangle, pushed down into contact with a slab of germanium. To measure the
amplification they hooked up a microphone to one end of the device and a
loudspeaker to the other. One by one, the men picked up the microphone and
whispered, “Hello.” The loudspeaker at the other end of the circuit shouted,
“HELLO!” Although William Shockley had played a smaller role in the invention
of the point-contact transistor, he was inspired by its promise, and devoted
his time and efforts for more than a month to improving upon the device. By
early 1948 he had devised the junction transistor, a device that shaped the
design of nearly all transistors to follow.
1968 – First Men to Orbit the Moon
Astronauts Frank Borman, James A. Lovell,
and William Anders become the first men to orbit the Moon. Flying in Apollo 8,
the men perform 10 total lunar orbits and test many of the procedures that will
be used in future lunar missions. Additionally, the men were the first to see
Earth as a whole planet, and the first to directly see of the Moon. On
Christmas Eve, the crew made a television broadcast from which they read the
first 10 verses from the Book of Genesis. It was the most watched television
program ever at the time.
1986 – Dick Rutan and Jeena Yeager
touched down at Edwards Air Force Base in the experimental airplane Voyager,
completing the first non-stop, round-the-world flight without refueling.
2008 – Santa Claus via Google Earth
Santa Claus is spotted on Google Earth. Of
course the story of St. Nicholas is an interesting one that doesn’t really
involve religion. But now we know where he resides, thanks to Google!
