Michigan. He would go on to help invent and co-found Google.
1976 – Queen Elizabeth II sent the first
royal email, from the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment in Malvern as a
part of a demonstration of networking technology.
1976 – Altair Computer
Convention
The First
Annual World Altair Computer Convention is held at the Airport Marina Hotel
near Albuquerque with his position on software piracy.
Of course, it was all about the Altair 8800. MITS (Micro
Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) was a computer that came in kit from
where you could build and improve upon it.
1996 – Hewlett-Packard
Co-Founder David Packard Dies
Hewlett-Packard Company co-founder David Packard dies after several
weeks of illness. With fellow Stanford graduate Bill Hewlett, Packard founded
Hewlett-Packard in a Palo Alto garage in 1983, spurring the development of what
has come to be known as Silicon Valley. The company’s first product was an
oscillator, eight of which Disney used in its groundbreaking film “Fantasia.”
Since then, HP has made a name in personal computers, laser printers,
calculators, accessories, and test equipment.
1999 – Melissa Unleashes
The first
e-mail virus to cause widespread damage and one of the fastest spreading
viruses in history, Melissa was released into the wild on an early Friday
morning and within three days would infect between 100,000 and 250,000
computers around the world. While the virus did not directly cause any damage,
the sheer volume of e-mail that it generated crashed many corporate *cough*
Microsoft *cough* e-mail servers.
