1882 – Ernst Werner von Siemens presented his “trackless trolley” called the
“Elektromote” in a Berlin suburb. This system pulled electricity from overhead
wires, but used road wheels instead of tracks.
1953 – KECA-TV, an ABC affiliate in Los Angeles, California, broadcast the
first US experimental 3D-TV. An episode of Space Patrol required specially
polarized glasses to watch.
1928 – Laszlo Belady Born
Laszlo
Belady, creator of the Belady algorithm (used in optimizing the performance of
computers), is born. Belady worked at IBM for 23 years in software engineering
before joining the Mitsubishi Electronics Research laboratory in the mid-1980s.
He wins numerous awards, including the J.D. Warnier Prize for Excellence in
Information and an IEEE fellowship.
2004 – Google Filed for IPO
Google
files the S-1 form with SEC for their IPO. They said they wanted to raise
US$2,718,281,828; a Mathematical algorithm based on the day they filed. The form
can be found at SEC.gov.
The stock finally started trading on August 19, 2004 at $85
a share in a unique online auction.
2004 – Sprechen Sie Sassy?
The
Sasser worm is released into the wild, infecting over 1 million Windows
computers worldwide. Looks like 1 million PC users stepped into a big pile of
sassy!
2005 – Apple released Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger,
introducing spotlight search and dashboard functionality.
