William S.
Burroughs receives a patent for his calculating machine and within a year had
produced 50 machines. They proved to be difficult to use but he soon improved
on them and went on to become a force in the developing calculator industry.
1973 – Sergey Brin was born in Moscow. His family immigrated
to the US in 1979. He would grow up to co-develop a search engine with Larry
Page and co-found Google.
1993 – Mars Observer Lost
NASA loses
contact with the Mars Observer spacecraft, three days before it was to enter
into orbit around Mars. The reason for the loss of contact was never
definitively determined, but the most probable cause was a rupture of a fuel
tank.
2001 – Internet2 (aka RNP2)
Connected
Using a
45 MBs line, Brazil became part of the Internet2, an internet connected to
multiple academics. The connection went from Rio de Janerio to Miami FI. Internet2
member rolls include over 200 higher education institutions, 40 members from
industry, 30 research and education network and connector organizations and
over 50 affiliate members.
