1852 – The first time signals were transmitted by
telegraph from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Even though 98% of Great Britain’s
public clocks were using GMT by 1855, it was not made Britain’s legal time
until August 2, 1880. Some old clocks from this period have two minute hands –
one for the local time, one for GMT.
1966 – First Photo Of Earth

1 took the first photograph of Earth from orbit around the Moon. Shot from a
distance of about 236,000 miles (380,000 kilometers), the image shows half of
Earth, from Istanbul to Cape Town and areas east, shrouded in night.
1991 – Nintendo (NTODY, -0.77%) launched the Super
Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) to customers in North America. While the
console had previously been available to Japanese and Korean customers in 1990,
as the Super Famicom and Super Comboy, respectively, the move to North America
was a significant one. It helped unleash sales that solidified Nintendo’s
position as a leading game console and video game maker worldwide.
1993 – Nintendo Agrees to Use
Silicon Graphics Technology
Nintendo
agreed to use Silicon Graphics Inc. technology in a video game player it was
developing. The move came as SGI entered a struggle that would continue to
sustain its business in designing machines and software for graphics-intensive
computer work. Partnerships such as the one with Nintendo didn’t stop SGI’s
decline as it struggled with decreasing revenues and leadership changes.
1999 – Pyra Labs Launched Blogspot
Pyra Labs
launched a program called “Blogspot” in 1999 that would let people run their
own blogs. The program was bought by Google in 2003, and changed to Blogger in
2006.
2002 – Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar
Released
Apple releases
Mac OS X 10.2, code-named Jaguar. For the first time, the “Happy Mac” icon is
not part of Mac operating system’s startup process, replaced instead by the
gray Apple logo that is still in use today. Jaguar was also the first Mac operating
system where Apple publicly used the code name to reference the operating
system and for marketing purposes. All Mac OS releases since Jaguar have been
referred to by its big cat-themed code name.
2012 – Microsoft unveiled a new logo for the first
time in 25years, opting for simple squares of color type with an overlapping ‘f’
and ‘t’.

2013 – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced he would
retire within the next 12 months
Microsoft
Corp. announced on August 23, 2013 that Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer
has decided to retire as CEO within the next 12 months, upon the completion of
a process to choose his successor. In the meantime, Ballmer will continue as
CEO and will lead Microsoft through the next steps of its transformation to a
devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value
most.
“There is never a perfect time for this type of transition,
but now is the right time,” Ballmer said. “We have embarked on a new strategy with
a new organization and we have an amazing Senior Leadership Team. My original
thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our
company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who
will be here longer term for this new direction.”
