1962 – NASA launched the Mariner 2 unmanned space mission to
Venus.
1989 – The first direct to home TV satellite launched from Cape
Canaveral. Marco Polo I delivered the British Satellite Broadcasting service to
home in the UK.
1993 – Compaq Introduces Presario
Compaq
Computer corp. announced its Presario family of personal computers, intended to
be user friendly and cheap. For $1,399, the Presario included a monitor, modem,
and software to access the recently popularized online world through Prodigy
and America Online.
2003 – World’s Largest Battery Backup
The
city of Fairbanks, Alaska connected to what was at the time the world’s largest
battery backup. Designed to help prevent serious blackouts that plagued the
city every two to three years, the batteries could provide power to the city
for a few minutes – enough time to start up the city’s backup diesel
generators. The battery contains 13,760 cells covering more than 10.square
feet. It was reported that in the first two years of operation, the battery
system prevented at least 81 power failures.
2008 – Fake Mad Men Profiles Rule Twitter
AMC
asked for the takedown of some Fans of the TV show “Mad Men” who decided to
create Twitter profile of the fictional character. Don Draper, Peggy Olson,
Pete Campbell and others were restored to their original stature. Of course,
you realize you are only getting Twitters from a fictional character, but what
the hey! It’s a great show.
