1894 –Norbert Wiener Born
Cybernetics author Norbert Wiener is born. Weiner’s book, published in
1948, was a major influence on later research into artificial intelligence. In
the book, Weiner drew on World War II experiments with anti-aircraft systems
that anticipated the course of enemy planes by interpreting radar images.
Weiner also did extensive analysis of brain waves and explored the similarities
between the human brain and a modern computing machine capable of memory
association, choice, and decision making.
1922 – “Toll of the Sea” debuted. It was the
first color movie that didn’t require a special projector, the second
Technicolor film ever, and the first in wide release.
1996 – MP3 Patented in US
United
States Patent 5,579,430 is granted to the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany for a
“digital encoding process”, the technology used in MEPG Audio Layer III, more
commonly known as MP3. MP3 technology paved the way for the digital music
industry by creating a high-quality format that was compressible so that many
songs could fit on the relatively small data storage devices of the time.
Fraunhofer had started work on compressing music as far back as 1977, began
work on what would become MP3 in 1987, and was awarded a patent in Germany in
1989.
2001 – Intel at TeraHertz
One
problem with technology is that you hit limitations, mostly due to materials
used or how small machines can make parts like transistors. For instance,
today’s multi-core x86 processors will eventually be replaced because we won’t
be able to put anymore transistors on the die – It’s called “Moores Law”. Intel
and AMD work hard to get around this law – which is why x86 technology has been
around since the 90’s. One thing scientists do to circumvent is to change the
restructure the transistor. In 2001, Intel did just that. They launched the
TeraHertz – a new transistor.
2003 - The final flight of a Concorde ended
when the supersonic jet touched down at Filton, Bristol, England, the airfield
where it was built.
