1876 – Mr. Bell Calls Mr. Watson
Alexander Graham Bell makes the
fateful call to his assistant, Mr. Watson, which is considered the first phone
call in history: “Mr. Watson come here I want you.”
1891 – Almon B. Strowger was issued a
US patent for his electromechanical switch to automate a telephone exchange.
Strowger wasn’t the first to think of automatic switching but he was the first
to make a practical switch.
1997 – Netscape Announces Third Generation Browser
Netscape Communication Corp.
announces a third generation of its World Wide Web browser software to compete
with Microsoft Corp. The new software focused on extranets, or private Internet
connection between companies. The competition between the two companies has
increased since then, culminating in a mandate by a federal judge that
Microsoft make it Windows operating system available without its internet
Explorer browser.
2000 – The NASDAQ hit 5, 048, 62, the
highest point of the dot-com boom. The bust began the next day.
2002 – Sony Clié Announced
The Sony Clié PEG-NR70 and
PEG-NR70v handled computers were released. These were 66 MHz PDA units running
the Motorola Dragonball Super VZ processor with a 16-bit color screen and
running Palm OS 4.1.
