1937 – Valentina Tereshkova was born in the Yaroslavl region of Russia.
She would grow up to become the first woman in space and only woman ever to fly
solo in space.
1986 – First Computer Sting Operation
Fremont, California police set up a BBS called “Phoenix Fortress” in
order to do one thing – catch cyber criminals. Sgt. Dan Pasquuale was the
online contact with the handle “Revenger”. He continued to stay in contact with
hundreds of hackers and pirates in seven states through the BBS until they
collected enough information to make an arrest.
Stolen credit card numbers, long distance
codes, selling weapons, hacking information and more were divulged through this
BBS. A lot of the arrests were misdemeanors and many arrests were made against
teens – ranging from 15 to 19 years old.
These who were convinced lost their
computer equipment. The original warrants were issued on Feb 26th,
so some arrests may have been made in the first few days of March.
1992 – Michaelangelo Virus strikes
Concerns over the Michelangelo virus sparked a scare among everyone from
personal computer users to world governments. As many as 5 million computers
reportedly were at danger of contracting the virus, set to erase data on the
March 6 anniversary of the artist’s birth. In fact, Michelangelo spread to only
a few thousands machines.
2009 – NASA launched the Kepler space observatory, with a mission to
discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars.
2012 – Google consolidated its various online stores, Android Market,
Google Books, Google Music, and Google video, into one store called Google
Play.
