1876Bell Receives Patent for Telephone
                Alexander Graham Bell received a US patent for an “Improvement in Telegraphy” (No.174, 465) which established the principle of bidirectional signals that made the telephone possible.

1926 – The first successful Transatlantic telephone call was placed between New York City and London. Transatlantic service began the following hear at $75 a minute.

1994 – The Supreme Court found that 2 Live Crew’s parody of Roy Orbison’s “Oh Pretty Woman” was fair use, and not a violation of copyright, thus ensuring the future of The Onion.

1996Pluto Photos Released
                Even though Pluto was first seen in 1930, we didn’t have the ability to take a decent picture of the furthest planet... er... dwarf planet… er… dang you Neil deGrasse Tyson!!!). The Hubble telescope finally was powerful enough to take photos of Pluto’s surface. They spent over 6 days taking snapshots and learning all about this distant neighbor.
Astronomers found that Pluto had a complex surface, just like Earth. Many basins and craters were discovered during that six day photo session.

1997First Internet Entry to Win Neologism Contest
              For the first time ever, and internet entry wins Bob Levey’s Washington post neologism contest. Contestants were charged with creating a new word to describe a negative reaction to Washington. Scott Burroughs’ suggestion, sqwashington, arrived 11 minutes before an identical entry.
