1902 – The Antikythera mechanism
The Antikythera mechanism was found off the coast of Greece. They only found a part of it, and wasn’t really sure what it did. Eventually, this device was declared to be the oldest known analog computer. This device was used to predict eclipses and astronomical events so ships could plan accordingly. The device was found by archaeologist Valerios Stais. British science historian Derek de Solla Price dated the device to 87 BCE. He concluded the device was lost only a few years after it’s production. The low-tin bronze device made the corrosion impossible to try and start.
1943 – US Army and University of Pennsylvania Sign Contract to Develop ENIAC
ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), an early all- electronic computing system, was developed and built by the US Army for its Ballistics Research Laboratory. It was the first system to use vacuum tubes rather than electromagnetic switches. Its purposes was to calculate ballistic firing tables. ENIAC was designed by J. Presper Eckert and John William Mauchly of the University of Pennsylvania. Constructed at that university’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering, when first commissioned, the computer was known as Project PX. It cost almost $500,000 at the time. Unveiled on February 14, 1946, it operated until Novermber9, 1946. It was then refurbished, given a memory upgrade, ad transferred to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, in 1947. On July 29th it was turned on again and ran continuously until 1955.
1954 – The first shovel load of earth was dug on the Meyrin site of the First CERN Laboratory building in Geneva.
1991 – World Wide Web Launched
The first server “web server” in history is set up by Tim Berners-Lee on a NeXTcube at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. The launch of this first server is considered the public release of World Wide Web.
