1822 – Charles Babbage Unveils Difference Engine
Charles Babbage unveils his design for a machine he called the Difference Engine, the first example of a mechanical computing machine. The British government funded the building of a Difference Engine, which Babbage never actually completed. However, Babbage’s design for the Difference Engine and his later Analytical Engine spurred future design of working mechanical computers. In 1991 a working Difference Engine was constructed using Babbage plans, proving that his design would have worked.

1938 – Action Comic Introduced Superman
It is one of the geekiest days for people like me. Creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster introduced one of the comic heros in Action Comics. Interesting enough, Superman was suppose to be a bad guy.
The first form of his appeared in “Science Fiction #3” in 1933. He looked more like Lex Luthor than the caped crusader. But with a little re-tooling, Superman made the comics and a piece of geek history.

The US Census Bureau dedicated its first UNIVAC computer – and experienced its first programming error. Once the bugs were fixed, the UNIVAC I became the first commercial computer to attract widespread public attention. Remington Rand eventually sold 46 machines at more than $1 million each.
