1854 – George Eastman was born to Marie kilbourn and George
Washington Eastman in Waterville, New York. He went on to found the Eastman
Kodak Company and invented the roll of film.
1949 – IBM’s Watson Believes Electronics Will Replace Moving Parts
At an IBM sales meeting, Thomas J. Watson Jr. predicts
that all moving parts in machines would be replaced by electronics within 10
years. Watson’s visionary ideals of where the fledgling computer industry might
go helped lead his company to dominance in production of all varieties of
computers, from workstations to personal computers.
1960 – Etch A Sketch Debuts
It is the famous drawing tool that became a cult
classic. A toy that is as collectable as the LEGO or Star Wars memorabilia. The
Etch A Sketch was first brought out on shelves in 1960. Of course, since then
it has taken it’s popularity to many levels. Some people create masterpieces,
while others just play with dials. I have an Etch A sketch attached to a
pencil, but it’s size is about the same as an iPad or other Tablet.
1990 – Nintendo releases the original Final Fantasy video
game for Its Nintendo Entertainment System in North America. One of the most
successful role-playing games for the NES, Final Fantasy helped to popularize
the genre and has one on to spawn one of the most well-known RPG franchises in
history. Ironically, the game’s creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, thought the game
would be his last one, hence the “final” in Final Fantasy. Had the game not
sold well, he would have quit making games and gone back to college. So much
for that.
2004 – Apple announced the iTunes Music Store sold its
100,000,000th downloaded song. “Somersault (Danger mouse remix)” by
zero 7 was purchased by Kevin Britten of Hays, Kansas.
