1867 – Alfred Nobel demonstrated dynamite for the first time at Merstham Quarry, Surrey.
1918 – Core Memory Inventor Forrester Born
Computer pioneer and MIT professor Jay Forrester was
born. With Robert Everett, Forrester led one of the most important early
computer projects, the Whirlwind.
Completed in 1951, the Whirlwind could store
2,048 16-digit words with its 4,500 vacuum tubes taking up more than 3,000
square feet of space. Forrester called the computer a reliable operating
system, as it was capable of running 35 hours per week at 90-percent utility.
1965 – First Mars Fly-By
NASA’s Mariner 4 becomes the first spacecraft to Mars
and the first to send back photographs of another planet from deep space. The
photographs are the first showing details of Mars’ surface including extensive
cratering.
1995 – Microsoft Announces Windows 95
After 15 million lines and 3 years of programming, Microsoft announces
Windows 95 was deemed “Golden”. That meant Microsoft could not make any more
fixes or adjustments would be made until it’s release on August 24th. Of
course, Microsoft Windows 95 was their first 32-bit operating system and
considered a major game changer in the world of computers.
2011 – Spotify Comes to the US
The US waited for this Swedish music streaming
service, and on this day, we got it. Founded in 2006, Spotify announced after
exhaustive negotiation with four major US record labels, they were given the
green light to launch. It came with much praise from the online community.
Since then, Spotify was integrated with Facebook, and launched their own apps
and app finder.
2015 – The New Horizons spacecraft made its closest approach
to Pluto after travelling for nine and half years and three billion miles. It
was the last of the nine planets to be approached by a probe, though Pluto had
been reclassified as a dwarf planet after new Horizons had launched.
