1961 – Trans World Airlines began offering regular in-flight movies on scheduled flights. The first film shown, only in the first class cabin, mind you, was “By Love Possessed,” starring Lana Turner and Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
1969 – The Eagle Has Landed
Eagle, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, successfully lands
in the area of the Moon known as the Sea of Tranquility. Upon landing, Neil
Armstrong utters the now famous phrase, “The Eagle has landed.” About six hours
later, while setting foot on the Moon, he utters the even more famous phrase,
“that’s one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.”
1976 – First Robot Viking I Lands on Mars
Viking I landed on Mars to explore the surface of the
Red Planet. The first robots on Mars, Viking I and its successor gave
scientists their first information about the planet’s surface, including
information they hoped would allow people to walk there. Although the Viking
probes found no evidence of life on Mars, they returned detailed pictures of the
planet and information about the soil’s composition.
1983 – Michael W. Vannier and his co-workers J. Marsh and J. Warren published the first three-dimensional reconstruction of single computed tomography (CT) slices of the human head.
1999 – Y2K Act Gives Government Protection
President Bill Clinton signs a bill into law
protecting companies from legal action. Today I have signed into law H.R. 775,
the “Y2K Act.” This is extraordinary, time-limited legislation designed to deal
with an exceptional and unique circumstance of national significance – the Y2K.
2004 – Apple announced the fourth-generation iPod with 12-hour battery life and the ability to shuffle songs. HP announced they would sell and HP branded version of this model of the iPod.
2012 – Dark Knight Rises
At the premier of the Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO.
James Eagan Holmes opened fire in one of the theaters. Holmes killed 20 people
and injured many. He is currently being evaluated for insanity with a court
date of Feb 13, 2014.
